Using the Computer Lab

Students majoring in ChemEng or MatSci and those taking CEMS courses are eligible for a CEMS computing account. This account will provide desktop access to 30 Windows computers in Amundson 132 as well as one Remote Desktop Server running Windows. Your CEMS account may store up to 1 Gb of data on our file server, which is backed up a nightly basis. Home directories, profiles, and accounts for all returning students have been retained from last year and new accounts have been created for new students.

Acceptable Use Policy

Please note that by using the University network in any fashion one implicitly agrees to be responsible for reading and complying with the University's Acceptable Use Policy available online here:

http://www.fpd.finop.umn.edu/groups/ppd/documents/policy/Acceptable_Use.cfm

Account Passwords

All accounts require new passwords. Please set a new password for your account by using a web browser to access the following URL:

https://www.cems.umn.edu/dept/undergrads/account/reset.php

You will be asked to authenticate with your University of Minnesota internet (x500) id and password and then you will be forwarded to a page for setting your CEMS computer account password. This webpage will be available for use throughout the semester should you forget your CEMS password.

  • CEMS passwords must be at least 7 characters long.
  • CEMS passwords must meet complexity requirements. Your password must contain three of the following four character types: upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, symbols.
  • CEMS passwords are case sensitive. This means the password differentiates between upper and lower case letters.
  • The CEMS password expires every 180 days and you may not reuse your previous two passwords.

Passwords are vital to safeguarding data and resources. For ideas on how to choose a good password, see

Printing

Printing accounts have been carried over for returning students and $2.00 has been credited to each account. You will be able to print to either black and white laser printer, Luigi or Mario. in Amundson 132 ($0.05 per page) as well as a color printer, Wario ($0.25 per page). For new students, the first time you print a page a new printing account will automatically be created with a starting balance of $2.00. To add additional money to your account, please go to the main office in Amundson 151 and speak with an administrative staff person there.

Wireless Networking

The Undergraduate Lab in Amundson 132 is equipped with the UofM Wireless network signal. Feel free to bring your personal laptop to gain access to the University's network. For security reasons, please authenticate to the "UofM secure" Wireless network. Authenticating will encrypt your login name and password and protect it from prying eyes. For instructions on using UofM wireless as well as using VPN, please go here:

Remote Desktop Access

CEMS has two Terminal Services Servers available for Remote Desktop Access. This provides access to many of the programs available in the lab in a desktop session akin to what is experienced in the lab. Use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client or a similar program to login to coltrane.cems.umn.edu or bifrost.cems.umn.edu using your CEMS login and password. Versions of Linux and Unix typically offer a program called rdesktop. The Remote Desktop Client is built in to Windows XP and Windows Vista and can be found at PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> COMMUNICATIONS. It is also available for download from Microsoft for earlier versions of Windows here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx

Remote access is limited to University of Minnesota IP addresses only. If you want to connect from off campus, consider using the University's VPN Client, if possible. There are known limitations with the client and the University will be migrating to a new system sometime during the summer of 2010.

Card Swipe Access to Amundson Hall

There is access to the building at night or on weekends with your UCard. The card swipe is located at the east entrance and all undergraduates should already exist in the system. If you find that your UCard does not work, see Teresa Bredahl in the main office (room 151).
