Application Instructions for to the CEMS Graduate Program


Thank you for your interest in the Chemical Engineering or Materials Science Graduate Program at the University of Minnesota. The application deadline for fall admission is January 1, 2010 although applications submitted later may be considered. Only under special circumstances are applications considered for spring and summer

Each individual's application, supporting material and background information will be considered holistically to determine eligibility for admission. The following are the admission criteria and instructions for applying to the program, with links to application forms and related websites.

Degree Programs Offered:
Ph.D, M.S., and Professional Masters. However, as a research institution we primarily admit students to the PhD program and financial support is not available for the M.S. or Masters. Students who wish to apply for a part-time Masters, while employed in local industry, should contact the Department before formally applying.


STEP 1 of 4 - Complete: Online Graduate School Application for Admission

  • Completed Application for Admission Form: Be sure to give your full name as it appears on your Social Security Card or Passport, if you have one, to ensure that it is properly processed.
  • Application fee: $75 for US applicants and permanent residents,$95 for foreign applicants. This fee cannot be waived or deferred, and it is not refundable. The application process cannot begin until the application fee has been received.
  • Financial Support Section: If you intend to apply for a research assistantship or fellowship with the University of Minnesota please indicate this on the admission form. Financial support from Chemical Engineering and Materials Science is available for PhD applicants only.
  • Applicant Statement #1: Educational and Career Objectives. Required.
  • Applicant Statement #2: Diversity Statement. Intended For US or Permanent Residents only. This statement will be used by the recruiting committee in CEMS for nominations for a Dove Fellowship. This diversity is promoted through the recruitment and support of academically excellent students with diverse ethnic, racial, economic, and educational backgrounds and experiences. Programs are encouraged to consider students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the graduate programs.
  • Extenuating Circumstances Statement – Optional.

Supplemental Information:

  • Grad Program Additional Application - Not required.
  • Writing Sample - Not required.
  • Description of Research or Work Experience. Include if applicable.
  • Resume or CV - Optional.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation are required.

Recommendation letters should be submitted online. An email will be sent to the online recommendation providers you list with an access code and instructions on how to proceed with the online recommendation. If your recommender cannot submit the letter online he/she can mail the letter directly to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the address shown below (not the Graduate School). They should be in a sealed/signed envelope and on their official letterhead.

Letters from schools that use a letter service for their recommendations are acceptable.

Copies of all statements that you submitted as part of the Graduate School Application for Admission will be printed by CEMS and attached to your CEMS Application. For this reason, we request that you do not mail additional copies as it will only cause unnecessary paperwork.


STEP 2 of 4 - Complete: Online Departmental Application (no fee required).


STEP 3 of 4 - Send the following to the Graduate School.

Please refer to the Graduate School Application for Admission Instructions for specifics requirements or additional information required by the Graduate School.

  • Copies of Official Transcript(s) from all universities/colleges you have attended. You can fax or mail copies. Transcript Information. Additional copies are required by the Department, as indicated in Step 4 of 4 below.

  • TOEFL MELAB, or IELTS scores (International Applicants). Operational Standards.

STEP 4 of 4 - Send the following to the Department.

  • Copies of official transcript(s) from all universities/colleges you have attended. An official, notarized (signature and seal) of your English translation should be attached if transcript is not in English. We will accept any form of the following:
    • Mailed photocopies
    • Legible faxed copies
    • Legible emailed copies
    • Mailed unofficial copies as long as they were issued with your name and the name of the institution on them. OR
    • Official copies sent directly from your institutions to the University of Minnesota.

    The Department reserves the right to require the submission of official transcripts/credentials any time during the admission review process. If you are admitted, we will require official transcripts/credentials before the start of fall semester.

  • GRE scores are required for all applicants (general test only). Our Institution and Department Codes for ETS are as follows: If you did not request an official report to be sent by ETS, please please mail, email, or fax a copy to the Department.

Helpful Mailing Information:
If you need to mail information to both the Department and to the Graduate School, to save on your cost for mailing, you can mail both envelopes in one larger envelope to the Department address above. Mark each smaller envelope as “for Department” or “for Graduate School”. We will make sure any information you send for the Graduate School is delivered to them in a timely manner.

We will automatically e-mail you a notice indicating if anything is missing from your department application, as soon as we complete the initial review of your application materials. We will also e-mail you a notice if your department application is complete and again when a decision is made.
