Chernomordik's work on new solar cell material featured in Chemical & Engineering News

Chemical Engineering graduate student Boris Chernomordik's work on a new solar cell material, copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS), with three undergraduate students, Amelie Beland, Donna Deng, and Anne Hunter, is featured in Chemical & Engineering News. The students work under the direction of Professor Eray Aydil. The research team prepares CZTS (an Earth-abundant, nontoxic material) as quantum dots, but then convert the nanocrystals to large-grain films to improve solar-cell performance. The new method is safer and simpler, and they are now working to control the process by which CZTS nanocrystals deposited on substrate morph during heat treatment into large-grain films. Aydil presented these new findings at a recent American Chemical Society (ACS) national meeting in Indianapolis, Ind.
