Fall 2009
Materials Science and Engineering 3012
Metals and Alloys
Syllabus
Lattices and Space Groups

Course Description:
This course introduces the fundamentals of the relationships between structure and mechanical properties of metals and alloys. Crystal defects, including grain boundaries and microstructres of metals and alloys are studied. An overview of elastic and plastic deformation is followed by a description of the relationships between deformation and atomistic processes, especially dislocation motion. Building upon this basis, strengthneing mechanisms in real alloys are related to processing and heat treatment. The tests used to measure mechanical property parameters are introduced.
