Inventing Tomorrow CoverJune 2009

The Kokkoli group's research is highlighted on the back cover of the Institute of Technology's "Inventing Tomorrow" spring/summer '09 magazine. This magazine goes out to alumni and friends of the Institute of Technology each semester. It is a great honor to be featured on the cover of such a high profile publication.

During IT Week - Awards and Recognition Banquet, a special event that recognizes outstanding Institute of Technology (IT) faculty and teaching assistants as well as student organizations and their advisors, Efie was honored as the keynote speaker for this year's banquet, and with an IT Professor Award in the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Department. Congratulations.

Ashish won the "Advances in Cell Biology and Synthetic Biology" award (sponsored by DCI-Biolafitte) for his poster presentation at the LifeScience Alley Conference.  Congratulations.

Efie was invited to organize and chair a Drug Delivery Systems session at the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 14th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium.  Eighty-two of the nation's brightest young engineers have been selected to take part in this symposium. The 2˝-day event brings together engineers ages 30 to 45 who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines.  The participants -- from industry, academia, and government -- were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and chosen from more than 230 applicants.

Efie was invited to attend the National Academy of Engineering's 2007 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. This symposium brings together eighty-three of the nation's brightest young engineers from industry, academia, and government. Each participant was nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and chosen from more than 260 applicants. For more information read the press release.

When Efie and Ashish weren't presenting their research, "Integrin alpha(5)beta(1) targeted delivery to colon cancer cells" at the 2007 Gordon Conference "Biomaterials: Biocompatibility/Tissue Engineering" they took the chance to have some fun with the other conference attendees. They hiked The Original Death March.

Anastasia successfully defends her Ph.D. thesis "Biomimetic Peptide-Amphiphiles for Functional Biomaterials". This is the first Ph.D. from the Kokkoli group.  Congratulations Anastasia! Good luck with your new job at Pace Anaytical, in the 3M Drug Delivery Systems Division.

Chuan, Efie, coadvisor Prof. Tsapatsis, and colleagues from CEMS-UMN, Department of Chemistry at UMN, and Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMASS, publish their work on "Mechanistic Principles of Nanoparticle Evolution to Zeolite Crystals" in Nature Materials. 
The work is highlighted on the NSF webpage.  Congratulations.
