Norris Research Group

WELCOME TO THE NORRIS GROUP HOMEPAGE

We study how structural parameters, such as size, shape, and periodicity, influence the optical properties of a material. We have been investigating two main classes of materials: photonic crystals for examining the role of periodicity, and nanocrystals for examining the role of size. To fabricate these materials, we mainly utilize colloidal chemistry and self-assembly techniques. Our goal is not only to study the fundamental properties of these materials, but also to investigate their uses in applications ranging from bio-imaging to solar energy. To learn more about our group and our research, please follow the links to the left.

Hong Wei Defends

Hong defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled, "Optical Properties of Silicon Inverse Opals," on 1/30/07 and became Dr. Hong Wei. The group celebrated with Hong and wished him well as he starts his new job at Kent Optronics in upstate New York.

Congratulations, Hong!

Kurtis Leschkies Wins Scholarship

Kurtis was one of three students chosen to receive a scholarship awarded by the Particle Scoiety of Minnesota. The winners were selected based on their exemplary academic record and research in areas of particle science and engineering. Each recipient will receive $1000 and will be invited to present his/her research during a lunch meeting of the Particle Society membership in spring of 2007.

Congratulations, Kurtis!
