Recent progress in high-resolution seismic tomography has been revealing an abundance of information on the 3D internal structure of the Earth. In this series I discussed some current and longstanding questions concerning the state of the Earth that are related to these observations. Interpretation of these observations requires knowledge of properties, particularly thermoelasticity, of minerals and mineral aggregates at high pressures and temperatures (P,T). I proceeded then to outline how high P,T elasticity can be obtained from first principles calculations.
