This graduate course in Materials Science covers subjects which are usually taught in graduate courses of Solid State Physics. It focuses on successes and inadequacies of band theory in different classes of solids, such as simple and transition metals, semiconductors, normal and correlated (Hubbard) insulators. The treatment is based on tight binding theory. The final evaluation consists of an oral exam and presentation of a research paper on electronic structure methodology.
