This course covers the fundamentals of the structure and properties of metals and alloys. Crystal structures, defects, and microstructures of metals are studied, including the effects of alloy composition and heat treatment on structure. A main goal of the course is to relate the structure of alloys to their properties, focusing on mechanical properties. For an understanding of mechanical behavior, elastic and plastic deformation addressed from the micro- meso- and macroscopic points of view. Topic include, strengthening mechanisms in alloys, deformation mechanisms in single and poly-crystalline aggregates at low and high temperatures, and fracture mechanics.
