- Alexis Bern (ChE ’21) has been named an “Outstanding Group Leader” as part of the 2020 College of Science and Engineering Tin Man Awards. Bern is President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and is an invaluable resource for students on campus. Much of her group’s effectiveness is credited to her leadership. Bern has held three executive board positions in SHPE over the course of her undergraduate career, including President (2019-2020), Vice President (2018-2019), and Community Outreach Coordinator (2017-2018). Bern remarked, “Through these roles I’ve been able to commit my time and joy in promoting and supporting Hispanic students in STEM fields in a multifaceted way.”
The 2019-2020 CSE Tin Man Awards recognize student groups' dedication to student engagement over the past academic year. The “Outstanding Group Leader” is awarded to a student who has gone above and beyond their role in their student organization and demonstrates the University’s student development outcomes of responsibility, accountability, independence, interdependence, goal-orientation, self-awareness, resilience, appreciation of differences, and tolerance of ambiguity.
