Ellison Co-PI on $1.98M NSF EFRI Grant

Nov. 21, 2018 - Associate Pofessor Chris Ellison (MRSEC Seed CEMS) was awarded co-PI on a new National Science Foundation (NSF) EFRI grant entitled "EFRI C3 SoRo: Strong Soft Robots-Multiscale Burrowing and Inverse Design." The team will study how soft robots of different sizes tunnel through materials. These discoveries may provide access where access wasn’t possible, such as inoperable brain tumors, or buried pipes. CEMS Professor Lorraine Francis serves as a collaborator on the project, and the awarded team includes College of Science and Engineering faculty members: PI Tim Kowalewski (ME) and co-PIs James Van de Ven (ME), Emmanuel Detournay (CEGE), Chris Ellison (CEMS), and University of Michigan faculty member Sridhar Kota.
