- Professor Jeffrey J. Derby presented the opening lecture of the 1st German-Austrian Conference on Crystal Growth (GACCG/DKT2018), held from February 14-16, 2018, in Vienna, Austria. The German Association for Crystal Growth, the DGKK, is the largest and most active crystal growth society in Europe, comprising researchers from German universities, government laboratories, and industry. The DGKK has been the umbrella organization for these crystal researchers and technologists for 40 years.
Derby’s invited lecture, “The synergy of modeling and novel experiments for melt crystal growth research,” highlighted collaborative work with German researchers at the Fraunhofer IISB, Erlangen, and University of Freiburg. Derby’s lecture emphasized the important connections between observations from microgravity experiments in Germany with insight provided by theory and computation by Derby’s research group in Minnesota, specifically on the engulfment of silicon carbide particles during silicon crystal growth. Derby also highlighted recent collaborative work with researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California-Berkeley, and Los Alamos National Laboratories, which employs neutron imaging and modeling of Bridgman growth of scintillator crystals.
