- Assistant Professor Turan Birol is among ten recipients of the 2021-2023 McKnight Land-Grant Professorship. This University-wide program seeks to advance the careers of the most promising junior faculty members who have potential to make significant contributions to their departments and scholarly fields. Recipients were chosen based on merit, professional promise, quality of publication record, and originality and innovation in research achievements.
Birol was awarded for his research on materials by computational design. Increasing computer power makes it possible to solve the century old equations of quantum mechanics to develop new insight about real chemical compounds. However, discovering novel materials with superior performance requires a systematic approach that goes beyond reproducing the observed materials properties. Birol's research utilizes ideas from solid state physics, chemistry, and materials science to develop design strategies for computationally discovering new materials.
