- Professor Russell Holmes was recently named a Fellow of the University of Minnesota Institute on the Environment (IonE). IonE Fellows have demonstrated excellence in one or more disciplines related to environmental protection or sustainability. Professor Holmes’ research is focused on developing materials, device architectures, and characterization methods for solar cells based on thin film organic and hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors. These materials have the potential to realize both high performance and low production cost. A central theme of Professor Holmes’ research in this area is to better understand the nanoscale transport of energy in these materials, while also devising new means to maximize the associated efficiency. Professor Holmes also co-directs the IonE’s flagship Discovery Grant “Materials for Renewable Energy and for CO2 Emission Reduction” with Professor R. Lee Penn.
